Racing Returns to the Waterfront

Miami Marine Stadium was built for powerboat racing. Now, one of the most recognizable waterfront venues in the world will become the starting point for a new chapter in the sport.

The inaugural Hydro Tour event will bring five classes of inboard powerboat racing to Virginia Key for four days of speed, competition and entertainment. From the close racing of Hydro Lites and Hydro Flats to the unmistakable action of Jersey Speed Skiffs, Hydro 350s and the 160-mph Grand Prix Hydroplanes, every class will bring a different style of racing to the one-mile course.

Bringing racing back to this historic location is possible through the involvement of Miami entrepreneur and lifelong boater John Ruiz and Luminsea. Ruiz founded Luminsea after years on Florida’s waterways showed him the need for safer, more visible and better-connected marine navigation. His vision extends beyond supporting the event. It is about using racing as a platform to demonstrate how modern technology can improve safety, course management and the experience of everyone on the water.

Luminsea will play an active role throughout the event, bringing its marine safety and navigation technology directly to the racecourse. Its illuminated smart-marker technology will make the course easier to identify, while real-time GPS capabilities will help officials monitor boat location, speed and course activity. That technology will also play an important role in the Hydro Flats class, where each boat’s 105-mph limit will be monitored live.

For Ruiz, the event also represents a return to Miami’s powerboat-racing roots. The city helped shape the performance-boating industry, and Miami Marine Stadium was the stage where many of its greatest moments unfolded. Bringing competition back to these waters connects that history with a new generation of boats, drivers, fans and marine technology.

This will be more than a return to the past. Hydro Tour and Luminsea are working together to show what the future of powerboat racing can look like: professionally presented competition, better technology, stronger safety systems and an experience that gives fans more ways to understand and follow the action.
